How to Stay Productive While Working from Home

Adjusting to the new normal of working from home during the COVID-19 pandemic can be a challenge for many who have never done it before. However, there is still work that needs to get done. Here are some tips that may help you stay productive at home:

Work regular hours

Establish a start and end time for when you will work just as you would when going into the office. Communicate this with your coworkers so they do not assume you are available at all times and you can still separate your work life from your home life.

Make plans and lists to stay organized

Write down what you plan to accomplish for the day or the week. When you set an intention for each day you increase your chances of getting things done.

Take breaks

Go for a walk or talk to a friend. If you take breaks throughout the day you will be more productive and give yourself a chance to refresh mentally and physically.

Avoid working in your bedroom

Working in your bed, will make you more likely to get sleepy or have a hard time feeling truly awake. If your bedroom is the only available space for you to work, try creating a sense of going to work by changing clothes or getting coffee before you get started.

Set expectations with people at home

It can be easy to get distracted by roommates, spouses or kids when working from home. Therefore, is important that you let them know when you are working and ask them not to interrupt you during those times unless it is urgent.

Stay connected with your co-workers

Working virtually makes it difficult to have the typical informal chats with co-workers. Try to find time have a quick phone call or video chat with your co-workers to keep in touch.

Work when you are at your most productive

Some people focus better in the morning, if you are one of those people start your day with your most challenging tasks. If you work better in the afternoons, then start work with more logistical tasks and save the more important work for when you feel you will be able to perform at your best.

When you are not working, take the time to enjoy having free time and relax. Try out that hobby you have always wanted to pick up, catch up your favorite television shows or just spend time with your family.
